The Scholars podcast is a show featuring scholars from the General Sir John Monash Foundation. Host Justin Kelly interviews the best, brightest, boldest and bravest across all fields of academia, business, science, humanities, and the arts. In this episode, Justin speaks to 2004 John Monash Scholar and international lawyer, Dr Danielle Malek Roosa.

Danielle completed an LLM at Harvard in July 2005, focused on international law. She then took up a position as a legal counsel with the World Bank in Washington DC, where she worked first as a lawyer in the international law and environmental law practice group. In June 2006, Danielle published an important analysis for the Global HIV/AIDS Program: Australia’s Successful Response to AIDS and the Role of Law Reform.

In 2010, Danielle was promoted to Senior Counsel. From 2007-2016, Danielle worked as an operational lawyer across five of the Bank’s six regions (Europe/Central Asia, Middle East/North Africa, East Asia/Pacific, South Asia and Africa). In this role, Danielle was solely responsible for drafting and negotiating international legal agreements on behalf of the Bank with the Ministries of Finance of the countries in her portfolio and handling the Bank’s legal portfolios in those countries. This included work in Egypt, Libya and Yemen during the Arab Spring, and a $2.125 billion loan to Kazakhstan (the largest ever Bank loan at the time) where she worked with three governments on a highly sensitive international stolen public assets case. In 2016, Danielle became the Bank’s lawyer on institutional governance matters.

She now advises the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors, Board of Governors and the Corporate Secretariat on disparate governance issues from ranging from Bank membership and shareholding to internationally disputed areas. She also provides advice, on behalf of the General Counsel, on institutional matters affecting the President of the Bank. Danielle has a PhD from the University of Sydney and has lectured on global financial institutions at Melbourne University Law School. She currently telecommutes from Sydney, where she resides with her husband and five children.

In this episode, Dr Malek Roosa speaks with Justin about her journey to becoming an international lawyer, what it was like studying at Harvard, her career highlights at the world bank, and how she balances work as a mum of five.
